FROM RISK TO RESPONSE: ADDRESSING THE CLIMATE–CONFLICT DISPLACEMENT NEXUS
Climate change is now the primary driver of displacement in Somalia and a major contributor to displacement globally. The country currently hosts an estimated three million internally displaced people (IDPs)—approximately 4% of the worldwide displaced population. This means one in every 25 displaced individuals globally resides in Somalia, illustrating both the disproportionate burden borne by the country and the magnitude of its displacement crisis.
Displaced populations predominantly live in makeshift settlements lacking adequate water, sanitation, or health infrastructure. These conditions routinely facilitate cholera outbreaks and other communicable diseases.
